What is CryptoDevil Ransomware?

CryptoDevil is a type of malicious software that encrypts your files and holds them, hostage until you pay a ransom.

How does CryptoDevil work?

CryptoDevil works by encrypting your files using a strong encryption algorithm. It usually arrives on your computer via email attachments or download links. Once it's installed, it will scan your hard drive for files to encrypt. CryptoDevil will then append the ".crypted" extension to the end of these files, making them unusable. Once your files have been encrypted, you'll see a ransom note on your screen telling you how to pay the ransom and receive the decryption key. The attackers usually demand payment in Bitcoin, as it's a decentralized currency that can't be traced. They will also give you a deadline to pay the ransom; if you don't pay within the specified time frame, they may threaten to delete your files or increase the ransom amount. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that you'll receive the key even if you do pay the ransom.

What encryption algorithm does CryptoDevil use?

CryptoDevil uses the AES-256 encryption algorithm, which is a symmetric key algorithm. This means that the same key is used to encrypt and decrypt the data.

How much does CryptoDevil ransom cost?

The typical CryptoDevil ransom is 1 Bitcoin. However, the price may vary depending on how much money the attackers think you can afford to pay.

History

CryptoDevil is relatively new ransomware; it was first spotted in the wild in August 2018. However, it has already been responsible for several high-profile attacks, including the one in the city of Atlanta.

Protection

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from CryptoDevil ransomware and other types of malware:

  • Use a reputable anti-virus program and keep it up-to-date.
  • Don't open email attachments from people you don't know.
  • Be cautious when downloading files from the internet. Only download files from websites that you trust.
  • Back up your important files regularly. This way, if you do become a victim of ransomware, you'll be able to restore your files from backup.

What should you do?

If you think it has infected your computer with CryptoDevil ransomware, you should take the following steps:

  • Run a scan with a reputable anti-virus program to remove it from your computer.
  • Change any passwords that may have been compromised during the attack.
  • Restore any encrypted files from backup.

If you do not have a backup, you may be able to use a data recovery program to recover some of your files. SalvageData data recovery software is built to help you recover your files under any circumstances. Alternatively, you can pay the ransom and hope the attackers give you the decryption key. However, we do not recommend this course of action as there's no guarantee that you'll receive the key and you're simply funding the attacker's future crimes.

Is there a public decryption tool for CryptoDevil?

At this time, there is no known public decryptor for CryptoDevil. However, the situation may change in the future, so it's important to stay up-to-date on the latest information about CryptoDevil ransomware and other types of malware.
