Can RAID 50 be recovered?

RAID 50, which combines RAID 5 and RAID 0 levels, is not a common configuration since it requires at least six drives. But RAID 50 does provide increased performance and reliability by combining striping and parity data distribution techniques.
This setup is also more reliable for data recovery in case a disk fails. This is because of the redundancy built into each RAID 5 array. Unfortunately, if more than one disk in any individual RAID 5 array fail at the same time, then the missing data from the failed disks may not be rebuilt without expertise and RAID 50 data recovery experience.

Diagram of a RAID 50 configuration. The image shows two groups of three disks each, labeled Disk 0, Disk 1, and Disk 2 on the left, and Disk 3, Disk 4, and Disk 5 on the right. Each group is labeled as RAID 5, and both groups are combined under a RAID 0 label. Each disk contains stacked blocks labeled with data (A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B3, C1, C2, C3, C4, D1, D2, D4, Bp, Cp, Dp, Ap) and parity (Ap, Bp, Cp, Dp), illustrating how data and parity are distributed across the disks in the RAID 50 setup.

What to do when a RAID 50 array shows signs of failure

RAID 50 offers better performance and fault tolerance than standard RAID levels, but it's still vulnerable to physical damage, multiple disk failures, and rebuild errors. If your RAID 50 array is showing unusual behavior or signs of failure, follow these three steps to protect your data:

Step 1: Identify the Level of Failure

Check the RAID array and server status using your RAID controller or monitoring tools. Determine whether the issue is isolated to one RAID 5 sub-array, or if multiple stripes are affected, which can result in full RAID 50 failure. If the system is unstable or degraded, shut it down safely to prevent further corruption.

Step 2: Stop Unsafe Rebuilds

Cancel any rebuilds if you're unsure about the setup. An improperly configured rebuild can overwrite valid data and cause permanent loss. Rebuilds should only begin when: A) All critical data has been backed up. B) The system was operating in degraded mode, not completely failed. Or, C) Failed drives are replaced with verified, same-capacity disks.

Step 3: Contact a Data Recovery Specialist

Due to the complexity of RAID 50, recovery attempts without expert oversight can worsen the damage. Speak with a recovery advisor to assess whether remote, on-site, or in-lab recovery is safest. A quick consultation can save time, money, and your data.
